5th Annual Ride and Cook off - HUGE Success

Written by Mary Thornhill

5th Annual Dutch Battle Memorial Ride and Gumbo Cook Off
was a huge success with approximately 350 motorcyclists in attendance.  The day's activities included live music from Soul Salvage Project in the morning and the Jeff Carrier Band in the afternoon.

The Opening Ceremony included the Hammond Fire Department presenting the colors, the National Anthem sung by Miss Heather Hand, followed by Amazing Grace performed on bagpipes by Keith Davis, what a moment it was!!  The memorial ride included a two hour route through the beautiful backroads of the Florida Parishes.

DSC_0011 Gumbo was ready upon their return and the motorcyclists were ready for it.  We had over 22 stations of the best gumbo, chicken/sausage and seafood.   LSU women's basketball coach Nikki Caldwell was one of our special guest and judges of the gumbo cook off.   If you missed it, you certainly missed a good time, good eating and good music!!  Of course, we must mentioned our vendors - what a shopping spree!!

Most importantly, it was a huge success for the Hammond Chapter in our continued effort to spread the message of awareness and safety.

Thanks to all and see you next year!!

The Dutch Battle Memorial MAC Chapter of Hammond participated in the Festival on Saturday and Sunday.  We were able to meet and greet many visitors and share the MAC message of awareness and safety.  "Watch For Motorcycle" signs were distributed and our distribution list grew.  The weather definitely cooperated as it was a beautiful weekend.  Our newest members of the Hammond MAC Chapter, The VooDoo Riders, had a booth right

next to our MAC Booth so we had double the fun!

Recap of the GWRRA meeting

Written by MAC Webmaster

The GWRRA of Franklinton, Louisiana gave a warm welcome to Dutch Battle Memorial MAC Chapter (Hammond) member, Mary Thornhill.  Mary was the guest speaker for the GWRRA’s monthly meeting on February 4th, 2011.  The meeting was held at Pine Seafood.  Mary presented to the 35 plus members in attendance an introduction to MAC, more specifically what MAC is not, followed by what MAC is.  The presentation included MAC’s growth, what local chapters are doing to spread the message of awareness, and further shared the various avenues that the GWRRA could take to support MAC.

Dear Motorcyclists:

THANK YOU!!

The Dutch Battle Memorial MAC (Motorcycle Awareness Campaign) Chapter of Hammond extends our sincerest thanks for your participation this past Saturday at our annual “Dutch Battle Memorial Ride and Gumbo Cook Off”. As always after such an event, we like to critique ourselves and see how we might improve.  We are especially interested in hearing from the motorcyclists to see how we might make it better and more enjoyable for you.  Therefore, we invite and encourage your input, suggestions, etc. with regard to the ride, the vendors, and all the day’s activities.

All proceeds from the event will go toward promoting MAC’s mission of safety and awareness.  MAC is aware of the fact that almost 2/3 of motorcycle crashes are the result of a motorist who violated a motorcyclist’s right of way or simply was not aware of the presence of a motorcycle.  Our soul purpose is to promote motorcycle awareness to the motoring public.  We strive to provide a safe riding environment for anyone who rides a motorcycle.  Basically, we do not want to hear any more “I just didn’t see the motorcycle” when accidents occur.  To learn more about MAC, I would invite you to visit MAC’s web site at:  macorg.com.

The Hammond MAC Chapter would love to have you attend our monthly meetings.  We meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:15 PM at Alack Superstore, 17420 Hwy. 190 E, Hammond, LA 70403. I do ask that you let me know if you plan to attend so that we might be prepared since a meal is served. Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 9th.

Again, thank you for your participation and continued support.  We look forward to receiving your comments and seeing you at our meetings.  Until then, ride safely!

Sincerely,

Mary Thornhill, Secretary
Dutch Battle Memorial MAC Chapter – Hammond, LA
