What happened to “The Wave”?

The Wave used to be a real thing.  Oh, I’m not talking about The Wave you’d experience at the ball park.  I’m talking about The Wave that existed between motorcyclists as they passed each other.  Is it just me, or has The Wave gone the way of the Springer front end?

When I started riding in college, back East, in the early 70s, The Wave was a left fist raised in the air.  I stopped riding while raising my family, and when I started again, here in southeast Louisiana in 2003, I learned quickly that The Wave was an open downwards arm, with the index and middle fingers making a V.

But I’ve noticed over the past few years that there are fewer and fewer riders who initiate The Wave.  Yes, they respond when I wave first, but so many times, if I don’t do it first, it doesn’t get done.  Sad.

What’s the deal with The Wave, anyway?  Why do we do it?  How did it start?  I was surprised to learn that The Wave is 120 years old.
