SOMETHING TO STAND FOR

I like Mike Rowe.  A lot.  Mainly because he has something that so few people in the public eye have: common sense.

In case you don’t know Mike Rowe, he’s the Dirty Jobs guy on the TV show of the same name.  He believes in work and that a good living can be carved out even if you don’t have a college education.  He believes it so fervently that he has set up a Work Ethic Scholarship Program which gives away $1,000,000 in scholarships each year.  Through the Mike Rowe Works Foundation, they look for hardworking men and women who want to learn how to keep the lights on, the water running, and the air flowing–people who will show up early, stay late, and bust their asses to get the job done in the trades…electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders, mechanics, HVAC technicians, and many more.

What does that have to do with motorcycles?  I’ll get to that in a minute.

Mike Rowe has written and starred in a new movie called Something to Stand For.  It’s based on Mike’s popular weekly podcast, The Way I Heard It.  I have listened to every one of the almost 400 episodes, each one a 5-minute mystery along the lines of Paul Harvey’s The Rest of the Story.

The Drakette and I saw Something to Stand For this weekend, and we HIGHLY recommend it.  In the film, Mike has picked 9 episodes to act out that take you an epic journey to the frontlines of the American Revolution, World War II, the Civil Rights movement, Fort McHenry, and other places, all of which have one thing in common: patriotism.

And THAT is the connection to motorcycles.

Through my association with the Motorcycle Awareness Campaign and the LA Rider TV show, I have become keenly aware that men and women who ride motorcycles are among the most patriotic in the United States of America.

The movie grabbed us and didn’t let go.  We could scarcely believe that those 96 minutes went by so quickly.

Something to Stand For will run, not coincidentally, through Independence Day.  Go see it.  It’s very entertaining, and best of all, it’ll make you proud be an American.
